On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
