United Kingdom Extends Methanol Poisoning Advisory List with 11 Nations
British government has included 11 more destinations to its travel warning roster concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated spirits.
This expanded travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only recently, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following several notable events like the tragic death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being cautions that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hours.
What is Methanol and How is it Used?
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical typically employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for drinking.
Although it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the distillation process.
However in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to save money, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Official Guidance for Travellers
Government minister a senior official said that each tourist should be aware of the signs of methanol poisoning.
"If you're having drinks overseas, choose trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.
"If something feels off, like a headache that's much more severe than usual or sight issues – get medical help fast."
The complete register of nations identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
